Governor Frank Murkowski appointed William (Bill) R. Hudson to the Board of Trustees of the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation on October 1, 2003, for a four-year term. Mr. Hudson serves as one of four public members appointed by the governor along with two cabinet officials on the six-member Alaska Permanent Fund Board.

Mr. Hudson most recently represented Juneau’s Valley District in the State House of Representatives until 2003 for 14 out of 16 consecutive years. As a friend of Governor Jay Hammond, witnessed the debate and design of the Permanent Fund at its inception. Over the course of 14 years in the Legislature he has been involved in decisions regarding the Permanent Fund. His other legislative experience includes serving as Chair for the Oil and Gas, Transportation, Resources, and Labor and Commerce CommIITees. He also served as a member on the Fisheries, Trade and Tourism, Finance, Regulatory Review and Military and Veteran Affairs CommIITees.

Mr. Hudson was born in Yuma, Arizona and grew up in the small silver mining town of Burke, Idaho. After high school, he attended Columbia University and Julliard School of Music in New York City on scholarship where he studied for two years. He left school to return home to help his family. He later traveled to the Fairbanks area where he worked at Dot Lake Lodge for one season. Upon leaving Alaska, Mr. Hudson joined the United States Coast Guard.

Mr. Hudson served in the U.S. Coast Guard for 20 years and rose up the ranks from Seaman Recruit to full Commander. Mr. Hudson commanded four ships and several shore stations and was selected to head up a special military mission in Liberia, West Africa. In that post, he helped recruit, train and oversee the newly created Liberian National Coast Guard.

Mr. Hudson retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and moved to Soldotna, Alaska in 1972. He worked for the Kenai Native Association until 1974 when Governor-elect Jay Hammond appointed him Director of the Alaska Marine Highway System. At that time, Mr. Hudson was responsible for maintenance and operations of nine ships as well as vessel scheduling, staffing, labor relations, new ship construction and representing the division before the public, the Legislature and the industry. He served as Commissioner of the Alaska Department of Administration from 1979 – 1982 with responsibility for 1,200 employees in 13 divisions and six independent agencies. He then served for three years as Executive Director for the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute where he managed domestic and overseas marketing and promotional programs for Alaska's seafood industry.

Bill and his wife, Lucy, have enjoyed their many years of service to Alaska, and Bill intends to continue that commitment through service on the Alaska Permanent Fund Corporation Board of Trustees. Both he and his wife intend to remain active in their community, and to give some new meaning to the word "grand" in grandparent.
